Dr. Michelle Elizabeth Flaherty is a lifelong educator, educational leader, and advocate for innovative, student-centered learning. With a career spanning early childhood education, special education, elementary STEM and gifted education, higher education, and school administration, Michelle brings a diverse perspective to teaching, learning, and educational leadership.
Currently serving as a High School Assistant Principal, Michelle supports students, families, and educators throughout Pennsylvania. Her work focuses on instructional leadership, professional development, educational technology, and creating meaningful opportunities for student success. Throughout her career, she has embraced creativity, collaboration, and emerging technologies as tools for transforming educational experiences.
In May 2026, Michelle earned her Doctor of Education in Leadership and Administration from Point Park University. Her doctoral dissertation, Beyond the Plate: Leadership Sensemaking and Operational Constraints in Plant-Forward School Nutrition Reform, explored the complex challenges and opportunities associated with introducing more plant-forward food options in public school nutrition programs.
Through qualitative research with school food service leaders, Michelle examined how educational institutions navigate the intersection of student nutrition, financial constraints, operational realities, and organizational change. Her findings highlighted the importance of student participation, sustainable decision-making, and collaborative leadership in creating meaningful improvements to school food environments.
Her research reflects a broader interest in the relationship between education, wellness, sustainability, and the systems that shape students' everyday experiences. Rather than viewing school nutrition simply as a matter of food choices, Michelle's work recognizes the complex leadership decisions involved in creating healthier, more inclusive, and financially sustainable school meal programs.
Whether working directly with students, mentoring educators, leading school initiatives, or conducting academic research, Michelle believes education extends far beyond the classroom. At its heart, education is about empowering individuals, strengthening communities, and creating opportunities for positive change.
For Michelle, meaningful educational leadership begins with listening, grows through collaboration, and succeeds when people remain at the center of every decision.
